Yeah, I get it

I visited with an infant nutrition consultant today because Jonas is below the 5th percentile in weight and length for a 9-month-old. (12 months: 17.5 pounds, 26 inches long)
Consultant: So it says here that you exclusively breastfeed. How is your supply?

Me: It's fine.

Consultant: (glances at my chest) Are you sure about that? You don't look like you're producing an adequate amount.

Me: Um........

Consultant: Because most women who breastfeed are significantly bigger than you.

Me: (mumbles) I'm wearing a sports bra.

Consultant: Hmmm (writes notes).

Oh, that consultant makes me mad! I think I would have punched her.
But you know what, like I've said before kids are all different. I think sometimes doctors want kids to fit the norm and they just don't. Marissa has always been tiny She is barely 21 pounds and she is 18 months old. I know she is healthy and she is a picky eater, but she has grown some.
I just hope that everything works out. I still think he is super cute.

Jonas looks perfectly healthy and happy to me! I am one, though, who thinks that there is nothing wrong with supplementing if needed. Just follow your intuition and don't feel guilty either way! I hate the fact that, because of differences of opinion, moms make other moms feel guilty.

Ridiculous!! Has he stayed steady in his growth, no matter where he is on the chart? Then he is fine! Bust size has nothing to do with milk supply!! Tell me you said something to her?? He looks healthy and happy to me!

You're small? Ha! I wonder what they would have said to ME, then, if I said I breastfeed, since I never got beyond a size A while pregnant OR breastfeeding...of course, that might be the reason I had to stop at 2 months. These tiny things didn't make enough milk! :-P

Oh I know just what you mean! oooh, that irks me when poeple make judgements. My youngest is in the LOW percent for his length and weight. He has been in the 5 to negative 5 percent for a while. It has been crazy for me cause my oldest had always been above the charts and really big for his age. It is crazy how different babies are. It really bothers me when I am out at the stores and people think my baby is 3 months and I tell them "no" he is almost 11 months. Then I get a dirty look or mean comment and have to brush off their rude judgements. Hello, I would NEVER underfeed my baby! I think your little one is just fine. As long as he looks healthy, has plenty of dirty and wet diapers, and seems happy, you have nothing to worry about! You are a great Mother! :)

That's funny. I get the same comments. Makes you feel good about yourself, huh?

oh my gosh. That made my jaw drop.

My sisters first baby was "small" as well- I believe under the 3rd percentile. They started running all these tests on her. I'm not exactly sure all the details. Anyway, everything turned out fine and they determined she's just petite. Duh.

I think doctors see more "big" babies these days so when they see a petite one they start to worry. As long as he's eating okay and gaining and growing weight at each appt., I wouldn't worry too much about it. He does have petite in his genes :)

Is that for real!!! So already you are a little concerned about Jonas' weight and length and then the consultant has to make it your fault... and in the worst possible way. Wow. I am not going to lie. I am wondering if my set will be able to produce enough milk myself so I had to chuckle a little. Not because of what the consultant said but because of your reply's.:) Oh dear, that consultant is just ridiculous. You should have said, "yeah, so you probably never breast fed, huh.". Ok, you shouldn't have said that. But someone so insensitive deserves a kick in the pants!

OK, I'm preparing myself to hear a comment like that because I'm pretty sure you're more well endowed than me...

Seriously? That is hilarious. I am exclusively breastfeeding and I still wear my barely A bras!!! Love it though!

Nothing like having your boobs assessed by a "professional" eh? Both my babies were underweight even though I did not exclusively breastfeed to the first year (I did breastfeed to the first year, I just also fed them table foods). You just do what feels right! :)

Wow! Rude! Carson was in the negative 3rd percentile for weight and 3rd for height the first year (at one point negative 10th),I even bottle fed with high calorie formula and it didn't make a difference he is probably just small like Carson maybe it just runs in the family? Babies can't all be like Conner :) My doctor even accused me of Smoking while I was pregnant (the nerve), and another doctor accused me of feeding him too much juice (Carson doesn't even like juice)
